06 Ripples in the sea (3.50)
Another musing on mortality and the ephemerality of life... triggered by hearing of the sudden death of the singer 'Mr John' (John Makin) who we had only recently watched perform, chatted to and jammed with at one of Roger Brawn's jazz parties in Brussels. I know my history there’s those that leave their mark
E A
In the annals of our great society
C#m A
But most of us are no more than a temporary spark
C#m F#m B
So should we wallow in our deep futility
C#m
Or should we just take comfort from the pleasures of our lives
G#m B
Or look for something deeper than the pressure to survive
F#m E
When the lights go out and the darkness comes
F#m E
Everything you have become will surely come undone

It’s the meaning of ephemerality,
B A G#m F#m E
Fading energy, pebble ripples in the sea
Well maybe its just my age or maybe its circumstance
Makes me dwell on the question of mortality
Is a life little more than extended St Vitus’ dance
And if that’s the case what’s left when we cease to be
What difference have we made by our presence on this Earth
Have we more to add than a generations birth.
When the lights go out and the darkness comes
Everything you have become will surely come undone
What’r’you leaving now for posterity
Fading energy, pebble ripples in the sea
